Launch Education - Helping Students achieve their potential
Meet Our Tutors (NY)

Alex C.

Yale University (B.A. in History)

Though born and raised in Toronto, Alex likes to think that he is a New Yorker. Throughout his time in school, Alex has tried just about everything. In high school, he played rugby and football, he learned to play the trumpet, and he was active in theater. In college, he joined a power-lifting team, was the Social Chair of his fraternity, and joined a dance group.

After graduating from college, Alex went to Columbia University to take classes in psychology. He will continue to take psychology classes and hopes to get his Ph.D. in school psychology one day.

Alex likes to spend his time working out, writing his first novel, watching movies, and traveling. Alex loves to teach and especially enjoys helping students gain confidence and realize their potential.

Alissa K.

Brown University (A.B. in Art History and Comparative Politics)

Alissa earned a double A.B. degree in Art History and Comparative Politics from Brown University before heading to Upstate New York to teach history at the Emma Willard School.

A city-lover at heart, she soon found herself in Boston, Massachusetts, where she obtained her M.A. in Publishing and Writing from Emerson College.  She worked for years as a freelance writer and art magazine editor.

Alissa moved to New York City last year to take a job in communications at one of Manhattan's top private schools, and she is excited to get back to her teaching roots with Launch Education.

In her free time, Alissa looks forward to long weekend brunches with friends, First Saturdays at the Brooklyn Museum, and jogs (which sometimes turn into walks) around Prospect Park.

Ariana C.

Brown University (B.A. in English Literature and Biology, cum laude)

Ariana graduated from Staten Island Technical High School and then attended Brown University, where she majored in English Literature and Biology. At Brown, she was a coxswain on the women's crew team, Editor-in-Chief of the campus publication (The Critical Review), and a research assistant.

In high school, she was completely fascinated by the college admissions process and now loves advising students who are applying to college. She is an alumni interviewer for Brown and an Area Chair for Manhattan. Ariana tutors biology, chemistry, and English grammar. She is a big fan of both hydrogen bonding and The Elements of Style and also enjoys running, watching classic Hollywood films, and wandering around Manhattan.

Casey S.

Brown University (B.A. in Comparative Literature); University College London (M.S. in psychodynamic developmental neuroscience)

Casey, a native New Yorker, attended Horace Mann High School and Brown University. Shortly after graduating from college, she moved to Los Angeles, where she worked for a year as a tutor. She helped her students with all academic subjects, and taught them critical study skills, leading to academic success.  She loved doing it.

She left Los Angeles to attend a two-year graduate program that was split between University College London and Yale; she studied psychoanalysis and neuroscience. She is currently writing a book that sprang from these graduate studies; it will be published in 2011.

Catherine B.

Harvard University (B.A. in English)

Catherine has always had a passion and aptitude for languages. As a young student, she volunteered to diagram sentences in English class. Her keen enthusiasm for grammar continued through her time at The Bryn Mawr School in Baltimore, where she maintained a 4.0 GPA. When she wasn’t hitting the books, she was in the pool, training hard to become a nationally ranked swimmer and a 3-time Scholastic All American.

After attending the 2000 Olympic Trials, Catherine matriculated to Harvard, traded in flippers for jazz sneakers, and joined a dance troupe. She entertained a brief flirtation with the Russian History and Literature department that lead to a 3-month stay in St. Petersburg.  In 2005, she earned her B.A. in English Language and Literature and received the Edgar Eager Memorial Fund Prize for poetry.

After graduation, she continued her habit of traveling to foreign countries without knowing how to say anything but “thank you” by spending a year in Beijing, China, where she taught in public and private schools and developed a philosophy of using subject-specific information to teach learning.

Now a writer/designer/editor with bylines and ISBN credits, Catherine is beginning graduate studies in Information Architecture and Human Computer Interaction. In her spare time, she reads, writes, researches film papers for fun, sews, dances, travels whenever possible, and teaches herself photography. She is fascinated by freezer mist and, as a byproduct of living in England during her early teens, she nurtures a deep and abiding love of Monty Python and Maynards sweets.

Chris C.

MIT (B.S. in Management Science, Minor in Economics)

After graduating from MIT, Chris worked as a consultant for a Boston based tech company before deciding that his true passion lay in medicine.  Since then he has worked at Columbia’s cardiothoracic surgery laboratory, where his work included flying to various hospitals where a donor match has been found, and then returning to Columbia with organs in tow.

In addition to his time at Columbia, Chris spent the last semester teaching several sections of General Chemistry II at NYU, where he also finished his post-baccalaureate pre-medical studies.

When he isn’t working on medical school applications or tutoring, Chris is most likely getting ready to throw on his snowboard and hit the slopes.

Chris M.

Princeton University (B.A. in Politics, French, and European Studies)

Christopher is a recent graduate of Princeton and a proud resident of the Upper West Side in Manhattan. Primarily a musician before college, he took up the social sciences while at Princeton along with extensive studies in French literature. He is an avid traveler and has often taken up residence abroad to teach, research, and work.

Passions of Christopher's include fitness, coffee, music, and, possibly above all, food. He still has a love for learning and is eager to share that passion with others. In his spare time, he can often be found in Central (or Riverside) Park making friends with neighborhood dogs or on one of his legendary walking tours of New York's best foods, which often end in a too-full-to-walk-home cab ride back to the Upper West Side.

Emmy R.

University of Virginia (B.A. in Foreign Affairs and Spanish with Highest Distinction, minor in Italian); University of Virginia (M.A. in Spanish Language and Literature); New York University (currently a Ph.D. candidate in Spanish)

Originally from Richmond, Virginia, Emmy left home at a young age to attend the elite Phillips Exeter Academy.  There, she received the opportunity to spend her junior year abroad in Barcelona where she fell in love with Spanish language and culture.  She returned south to attend the University of Virginia, where she continued her study of Spanish and began tutoring Spanish and English as a Second Language.  She was also able to continue her zeal for international travel, studying abroad and interning in Spain, Italy and Cyprus.

Emmy currently is a doctoral candidate at New York University, where she teaches undergraduates and studies 20th Century Peninsular Spanish Literature.  She has a passion for teaching, and while she enjoys the classroom, she especially likes the rapport developed in one-on-one instruction.  In her spare time, she enjoys travel, cooking, and rooting for UVA sports.

Erika G.

Duke University (B.S. in Biology and European Studies, Minor in Chemistry); New York University School of Medicine (M.D.)

Erika grew up on Long Island and spent her high school career tutoring Spanish, French, and math.  After graduation, she enrolled at Duke University, where she majored in Biology and French/European Studies.  She minored in Chemistry.  Erika also spent a summer in Spain for a study abroad program that focused on art history and architecture.

In college, Erika enjoyed swimming and working with several volunteer organizations.  She worked for the Duke Peer Tutoring Program and was a calculus grader for the math department.  Erika also volunteered for the Duke University Medical Center Hospital School, teaching hospitalized high school students math, biology, chemistry, French, and Spanish.

Erika recently graduated from the NYU School of Medicine.  She is currently doing a post-doctoral fellowship in research, working on the Human Microbiome Project.  In her spare time, she enjoys swimming, writing, and running.

Esther C.

Duke University
(B.A. in International Studies); Harvard University, Graduate School of Education (Ed.M. in Language & Literacy)

Esther cannot seem to escape from the East Coast. No matter how much she has tried to stay in her sunny, breezy hometown in LA after graduating from Duke University, New England has beckoned her -- first, to the Harvard Graduate School of Education, where she earned her Master’s in Education in Language & Literacy, and now to the Social Science Research Council where she coordinates the Education Research Program.

Having learned languages since she was very young, Esther continues to enjoy exploring new places and cultures, both local and global. She would rather walk twenty blocks than take the subway to absorb the vibrant life and culture of her surroundings (which her native NYC friends find simply appalling). This is most likely what she’d be doing in her leisure time-- simply absorbing the city and taking full advantage of what it offers (and persuading her friends to do likewise).

Helping and mentoring young students is second nature to Esther, who is the eldest of all her cousins and has tutored students of all ages in a range of subject matter. She simply loves working with youth (they keep her young!) and guiding and encouraging them to reach their highest potential.

Evan S.

Sarah Lawrence College (B.A. in Theater Studies)

Raised in the New York Metropolitan area, educated at Sarah Lawrence and in England, Evan has developed a love for the arts and culture. In college Evan focused his time on theater, photography, and politics while working at shows such as Saturday Night Live and Law and Order.

After college Evan traveled around the Middle East for several months before moving to Brooklyn to pursue a career in acting.

Today Evan teaches students with multiple needs. Trained in Lindamood-Bell’s programs, he has had wide experience working with students of various cognitive styles and learning disabilities. With his energetic personality and eagerness towards learning he has helped remediate diverse learning challenges.

Jessica A.

Columbia University (B.A. in Economics, emphasis in Mathematics)

Originally from Ocean Springs, Mississippi, Jessica moved to NYC at the age of 18 and has been in love with the city ever since.

She attended Columbia University and graduated in May 2008 with a B.A. in Economics (emphasis in Mathematics).  While in school, she studied Industrial Engineering, Modern Greek, and has previous work experience in Engineering at NASA/Naval Oceanographic Office.

Jessica has loved teaching and mentoring from an early age.  Throughout her time in high school, Jessica put her excellence in academics to use,  helping classmates improve their math and test-taking skills. In college, Jessica tutored part-time, and volunteered as a mentor.  She also served on her sorority's membership development committee and led the chapter as its Vice President Education--finding most of her happiest memories of those four years in holding study hours and Econ cram sessions for her sisters.

Currently working in finance, Jessica spends many of her weekend and evening hours speaking at young women's development events and guiding low-income NYC students through resumes and mock-interviews.

Hoping to gain even more experience educating this coming year, Jessica is excited that her goal of finding a tutoring position that values an empathetic relationship with the student--not just strong academic skills--seems well aligned with the Launch philosophy!

Jessica B.

Harvard University (B.A. in English)

Jessica is 25 years old and currently living in Brooklyn Heights with her lively roommate Carolyn.  Jessica graduated from Harvard University in 2007 with a degree in English Literature and Language and now works in advertising on the Downy fabric softener account.  In her daily work, she manages TV and print creative development and production.  In her free time, Jessica enjoys live music, movies, friends, barbecues and Netflix.

Jessica tutored a good amount in her past and is very excited about the prospect of helping students with history, literature and any basic math in the near future!

Jill J.

Columbia University (B.A. in English)

Originally from Maryland, Jill moved to New York City in 2006 to pursue her B.A. at Columbia, where she majored in English and Spanish. While an undergrad, she also travelled to Central America to teach English with two NGOs, and cannot seem to stop returning to the region. She is currently working in Manhattan as an advisor for area college students.

Jill likes to read, write, and wander the city, and can normally be found meandering through Central Park, checking out area museums, and scoring discounted tickets to musical theater.

Justin S.

Amherst College (B.A. in English and German, magna cum laude); University of Chicago (M.A. in English); University of Vienna (M.A. in European Studies); Harvard University (M.Ed. in Teaching and Curriculum)

Justin, a native Californian, went east for college and never looked back. At Amherst, he studied English, Middle English, German and Russian. He's spent the past decade, both in the United States and abroad, earning graduate degrees and working in the field of education. For five years, Justin taught English in Vienna, Austria, chiefly at a K-12 international school and at the University of Vienna. He has also taught at the United World College of Hong Kong. For what it's worth, he's certified to teach in public schools by the states of Massachusetts and New York.

Since 2008, Justin has taught undergraduate writing at Columbia University. His own writing has appeared in Education Week, the Des Moines Register, the Boston Globe, Time Out New York, the Huffington Post, The Washington Post and The New York Times. In his free time, Justin enjoys traveling, attending concerts and theater performances, reading fiction and learning new things. His favorite authors include Toni Morrison, Philip Roth, Vladimir Nabokov and William Shakespeare. When not otherwise occupied, Justin is also completing his Ph.D. in Politics and Education at Columbia University.

Kathy C.

Cornell University (B.A. in Psychology with distinction in all subjects and Phi Beta Kappa); New York University (M.A. in Spanish and Latin American Languages and Literatures)

Originally from Boston, Kathy moved to Ithaca, NY, to attend college.  At Cornell, she majored in Psychology but also studied Spanish and spent a semester abroad at the University of Seville, Spain.

In August 2007, she returned to Spain to obtain her Masters from New York University 's graduate program in Madrid, where she also tutored undergraduate study abroad students in Spanish.

Upon graduating, Kathy spent another year in Madrid , continuing to tutor for NYU while teaching English at a private school and providing private English lessons to students.  In addition, she has several years of experience tutoring students in math, verbal abilities, and essay writing in preparation for the GRE.  This Fall, she will teach an undergraduate intermediate Spanish course at Fordham University.

In her spare time, Kathy enjoys finding Red Sox-friendly spots in NYC where she can watch baseball without getting booed.

Kristy K.

Boston University (B.A. in English and History); University of Massachusetts--Boston (M.Ed in Secondary English Education)

Kristy first broke into the field of education tutoring students at the historic Cambridge Rindge and Latin, former high school of one of her favorite poets, e.e. cummings.  Five years later and she has been recognized as an exemplary teacher, her classroom serving as a lab for best practices as part of the Lab Site Initiative to improve teacher
quality in NYC.

With experience teaching both AP English courses (Literature and Language), she believes she has finally realized her dream of finding a career that supports, perhaps demands, her passion for reading.  When she is not teaching, planning, grading, or talking about the current state of education, she is probably asleep.  However, when time allows, she enjoys traveling, swimming, and (of course) reading.  She may be hopelessly in love with Gabriel Garcia Marquez and appreciates almost any work of magical realism.

Kristy looks forward to teaching students the "hidden curriculum" of school (study skills, organization, time management) and can't wait to geek out over the power and beauty of the English language!

Laura K.

Harvard University (B.A. in English); University of Cambridge (M.Phil in American Literature)

Laura grew up in rural Pennsylvania, where the oldest house in her neighborhood had chickens but not electricity.

Perhaps because of the weird smell of chickens, she’s been on the run ever since: boarding school (The Lawrenceville School), Harvard, England, and now New York.  She has studied in Italy, worked in Germany and Nigeria, and hiked along Greenland’s west coast on a research fellowship. She keeps trying to learn new languages but usually resorts to emphatic hand gestures.

This year Laura is embarking on a post-baccalaureate pre-med program.  She’s also a terrible guitarist, a half-decent cook, a good cyclist and runner, and a hopeful creative writer.

Mai W.
Yale University (B.A. in English, Writing Concentration)

Mai recently graduated magna cum laude from Yale, where she devoted her time outside of class to writing short stories, singing with the Glee Club, and tutoring elementary school kids in the Greater New Haven community. In her senior year, she was elected to Phi Beta Kappa and received the Lloyd Mifflin Prize for outstanding work in the English major.

A published fiction writer, Mai moved to New York City to continue pursuing her literary dreams, but that hasn't stopped her from spending plenty of time on her other passions--cooking and traveling. Born in Beijing, Mai is fluent in conversational Mandarin and has visited China on numerous occasions to sample its dumplings. Her interest in other cultures also led her to study abroad in Leon, Spain, where she learned the ins and outs of the local tapas circuit. Mai loves New York for its diversity, and she hopes to work with a wide range of students as a Launch tutor this year.

Matt A.

Georgetown University
(B.A. in Government)

Originally from Greenwich, CT, Matt attended Greenwich High School where he was active in the music and theater programs.  At Georgetown, he majored in Government and minored in English literature. He is also a graduate of the Circle in the Square Theatre School, and is still deciding whether he wants to actually be a politician one day or just play one on TV.

Matt is passionate about history, politics, movies, and eating.  He is an enthusiastic and responsive tutor who enjoys working with students of all ages.

In his spare time, Matt goes running in Central Park and volunteers at Sanctuary for Families, a New York City non-profit.

Mike S.

Cornell University (B.A. in Mathematics); Columbia University (M.A. in Mathematics Education)

After working for a few years in the corporate world, Mike decided to become a teacher. He applied for and won the Newton Fellowship offered by a non-profit called Math for America. He received a free master's degree from Columbia (in math education) in exchange for his commitment to teach math in New York City. While Mike was in grad school, he tutored students for the SAT, GRE and GMAT.

Mike taught algebra and geometry at a Manhattan public school for three years. During that time, he continued tutoring. He also started working as a freelance mathematics writer. He has written parts of textbooks, workbooks and practice problems for all types of standardized tests. In 2007, Mike served on an item-writing committee that published questions for the New York State Regents exams in Mathematics.

When tutoring students, Mike employs a healthy mix of traditional pedagogy and test-taking strategies. He draws upon his experiences as both a classroom teacher and a mathematics writer which, together, give him unique insight into understanding how students learn.

Mike is passionate about traveling the world and exploring new places. His favorite country is Spain, and his favorite city is London.  He enjoys learning and speaking other languages and has dabbled with Spanish, Portuguese and French. Mike's favorite type of math is trigonometry, and his lucky number is 9.

Miriam A.

Stanford University (B.A. in Philosophy and Religious Studies)

Miriam grew up in the San Francisco Bay Area and decided in high school to be a pianist, or maybe a rabbi.  She graduated from Stanford University in 2002 with a B.A. in philosophy and religious studies and a minor in music.

After college, she moved to New York to devote one year to learning Talmud in an Upper West Side yeshiva and another year to attending rabbinical school in Philadelphia.  Ultimately, however, she decided to pursue a more focused study of ethics instead of becoming a rabbi.  She now studies biomedical ethics under Drs. Baumrin and Rhodes at CUNY's Graduate Center, where she is pursuing an M.A., attempting to answer some of the ethical questions surrounding euthanasia.

When she gets tired of thinking about death, she enjoys waltzing and swing dancing, co-leading an occasional Shabbat service at her synagogue, writing new music or playing old music on her accordion, and singing old songs.  She often does two or more of the above at the same time, and sometimes she does them in public.

Nargus H.

University of Pennsylvania (B.A. in Philosophy, Politics, Economics (PPE) & English, with highest distinction honors, magna cum laude)

Nargus graduated magna cum laude from the University of Pennsylvania with a B.A. in PPE and English, with highest distinction honors in her majors. During her tenure at Penn, Nargus completed research for the Director of the Critical Writing Program that examined efficacious tutoring techniques and was certified as both a Speaking Advisor and Writing Advisor. She also competed as a member of the women’s swimming team, worked as an editor for the PPE Journal, and served as social chair to the PPE Dept. and the Mortar Board Senior Honor Society.

After graduation, Nargus worked in finance but returned to academia to pursue a post-bacc in psychology. She is currently studying under scholars directly certified by TKV Desikachar to become a yoga instructor: this tutelage, in conjunction with her post-bacc, paves the way for her journey as a PhD candidate in clinical psychology with a focus on existentialism and mindfulness techniques.

Nargus has extensive experience in tutoring and coaching in areas such as English, math, nutrition, running, and swimming. She is excited to be part of the Launch team so that she can help students realize their unique creative energies and academic zing!

A product of the sweetest place on earth, Hershey, PA, Nargus is an avid marathoner, published poet, painter, and pianist. Some of her favorites include: autumn, chimineas, Gustav Klimpt, Albert Camus, and watching the tiny tugboats dot the Hudson.

Nick S.

Northwestern University (B.A. in English, honors); Cornell University (M.A. in English, ABD)

Born in sunny Southern California, Nick headed off to the windy city for college, where he majored in English and perfected the snow angel.

After college, Nick worked to develop a literacy program on the Yakima Indian Reservation in Central Washington. The experience gave him a taste of teaching and working with youth, which has since grown into a calling.

After a year in Washington, Nick enrolled in a Ph.D. program and braved a couple of frosty winters in upstate New York, eventually deciding that teaching was his passion and that a dissertation could wait.

He now teaches English full-time at Poly Prep in Brooklyn. Nick is very familiar with the demands of an independent school curriculum and enjoys helping young people master them. When he’s not teaching or hunched over a book, Nick might be found at the movies, watching sports, or running in his Brooklyn neighborhood.

Philip A.

Columbia University (B.A. in Biochemistry)

Philip originally hails from the character-building suburbs of Wheaton, Maryland. In high school, he started at center field, was narrowly beaten in the county debate championship by his own teammate, and tied for second-funniest in the grade in an informal survey.

He attended Columbia University, where, among other things, he organized ice cream study breaks in his capacity as an RA, conducted research in molecular biology in his capacity as a budding scientist, and made good friends in his capacity as a person. He graduated with a degree in biochemistry, whereupon he worked as a high school chemistry teacher and, thereafter, conducted biophysical research in Singapore.

Philip currently works in a neuroscience lab during the day where he investigates visual processing in the brain. Things Philip enjoys include running, playing music, and finding rocks where he can sit and let his mind wander. Philip is excited to be part of the Launch Education team and help students develop academically and achieve their goals.

Rachel K.

Brandeis University (B.A. in Health: Society, Science and Policy and Spanish Language and Literature, cum laude)

Rachel grew up in Queens and Long Island but is now a resident of the Upper West Side.  She graduated in 2008 from Brandeis University with a B.A. in Health: Society, Science and Policy and Spanish Language and Literature.  During her time at Brandeis, Rachel gained lots of tutoring experience through privately tutoring students as well as volunteering with Brandeis' community service organization that tutors local students.  She loves learning and enjoys sharing this passion with others.

After graduating, Rachel worked for 1.5 years at non-profit mental health organization based out of Manhattan.  Rachel is passionate about traveling and spent 6 months of the last year exploring Central and South America.  Starting in the fall, Rachel will begin her Master's degree in Public Health at Columbia's Mailman School of Public Health.

During her free time, you can find Rachel practicing yoga, enjoying the many different restaurants of New York City, or catching up on her recorded TV shows.
Sara B.

Harvard University (B.A. in History); Columbia University (Ed.M. and M.A. in Counseling Psychology); Mercy College (M.S. in Education)

Sara grew up in Baltimore, Maryland and attended the prestigious Bryn Mawr School for Girls. While receiving her B.A. she tutored middle school students of low-income background in Roxbury, Massachusetts. Sara went on to pursue her Master's degree in counseling psychology and has counseled children and adolescents in both the school and hospital settings. She is now a public school teacher in the South Bronx.

When she is not teaching or counseling, Sara is researching and writing on the subjects of urban education and multiculturalism. Sara is passionate about the academic achievement and social and emotional development of underprivileged youth. She also enjoys sports, travel, and comedy shows.

Sara H.

University of Pennsylvania (B.A. in Anthropology, minor in music, Summa cum laude and Phi Beta Kappa); Boston University (M.M. in vocal performance)

After graduating from college, Sara decided to pursue her love of singing and thus began her journey to become a professional opera singer.  This journey eventually brought her to New York City, which she now lovingly calls home, despite the occasional city critters she finds in her kitchen.

Stops along the way included a semester volunteering with a community service organization in the Dominican Republic, several summers basking in the aroma of andalusian jasmine, excursions in the fishing villages of Japan, and a year-long adventure living la vie boheme in Paris.  That year nurtured her love for culture and language (and patisseries!), and in particular a fascination with how one can actually start to feel French when immersing oneself in the French language.  She believes that intimate knowledge of a language is the key to understanding a culture, and what better way is there to learn more about people and the world we live in?

These days, Sara divides her time between the practice room, the performance stage, farmers' markets, and getting lost in conversation with family and friends.  A lifelong student herself, she seeks to help the people she tutors find a similar passion for learning.

Sarah C.

Dartmouth College (B.A. English and Creative Writing)

Sarah was born and raised in Long Island, though she sometimes hides it by saying she's simply from New York. She graduated from Dartmouth College in 2007 with a B.A. in English and Creative Writing.

Her first love remains reading, and she enjoys teaching students how to appreciate the subtle nuances present in all types of fiction. Her aspiration is to write poems that make people cry about the "boredom, and the horror and the glory" of the world. When she is not working, she writes, pretends to write, talks about writing, and thinks about writing.

Sohail A.

University of California, Berkeley (B.A. in Film & Rhetoric)

Sohail is an aspiring filmmaker and screenwriter and is currently trying to get a feature film off the ground.  He also happens to have years of experience as a tutor, in the U.S. and in Europe, and comes from a family of teachers.

Raised between the midwest and the southwest, Sohail moved to the San Francisco Bay Area in 2000 to study at Berkeley.  Over the following years, he has worked, traveled and studied in various places throughout Europe, including England and Italy.

Sohail specializes in math and is able to tutor all math subjects from K-12 and some college courses.  He has extensive experience tutoring all areas of the SAT and has prepared many students for specialized programs such as AP, IB and British A-Levels.

Sohail strives to create a comfortable and encouraging environment for his students, one where they can feel confident with their own academic progress and feel free to let their personality shine through.

Suraj G.

Amherst College (B.A. in Music, cum laude)

Suraj was born in the great city of Allentown, Pennsylvania, and is a Moravian Academy alumnus. In high school, he wrote stories for school publications, played in the jazz band, and captained the soccer team.

Suraj was unexpectedly bit by the teaching bug after graduating from Amherst in 2007, when he accepted a position as a TA/Assistant Choral Director in the Music department. The key to his enjoyment was found in making education an escape from stress, rather than a creator of it. He continued this process last year, tutoring in Cambridge, MA, and playing music with various local bands.

Currently, he is a Production Assistant on various NYC film sets. When he is not on the clock, Suraj can be found at his laptop working on Pro Tools sessions, or at his keyboard, guitar, saxophone, or tablas. He hopes to soundtrack the next Bollywood thriller, or maybe just DJ his friends’ basement party.

Ted S.

University of California, Berkeley (B.S. in Mechanical Engineering)

Ted, 31, is a San Francisco native and a recent transplant to New York. He began tutoring at City College of San Francisco, and continued tutoring privately while studying Mechanical Engineering at UC Berkeley. Since completing his B.S. in 2003, Ted worked in the engineering field for a brief time, before going back to what he enjoys, teaching math.

In addition to teaching, Ted is also a performing musician. He has studied jazz piano at the Jazzschool in Berkeley, CA, and has played piano/keyboards in musicals, rock bands and revues in the San Francisco bay area on and off for the last five years. He plans on eventually getting a degree in music composition.

Tim M.

Washington University in St. Louis (B.A. in Mathematics); Bard College (M.A. in Mathematics Education)

Tim has been teaching people about mathematics for over five years now, and teaching himself about mathematics for over 20.  As a self-described math nerd, Tim has a knack for making others interested in the subject he enjoys.  He is always on the lookout for a new method that might convey deeper meaning either to himself or the people that he works with.  Tim feels that his job is to teach the student about mathematics that they do not yet know--as such, his level of patience is high, and he will not stop until certain that knowledge has been obtained.  Aside from math, Tim enjoys writing/filming sketch comedy, dodgeball, and writing about himself in the third person.

Zachary L.

University of Chicago (B.A. in Classical Languages and Literature)

Zachary is interested in everything: baseball and bird-watching, Plato and pleonasm. Love of the outdoors has always been a big part of Zachary's life. He has traveled to National Parks and exercises daily in Central Park.  Learning does not have to take place with your nose in a book, and there are many important lessons that can only be learned by personal contact and tangible experience.

After receiving his diploma last winter, with his voracious appetite for books and thirst for learning not yet satisfied, Zachary began graduate study at the Jewish Theological Seminary this year. Just as a good chef must himself love to eat, it is because of Zachary's appetite for learning that he can teach others to appreciate the subtle pleasures of knowledge.
