Meet Our Tutors (LA) - A to I

Alexandra P.

Harvard University
(B.A. in Human Evolutionary Biology and Mind/Brain/Behavior)

Originally from Denver, CO, Alexandra began tutoring Math and English in high school.  In college she tutored various science classes for the Harvard Bureau of Study Council as well as the MCAT and academic subjects for Veritas Tutors. Her research background includes cancer cytogenetics and neuropharmacology, and she always works to encourage scientific reasoning and exploration in her students.  Alexandra loves skiing and tries to get back to Colorado whenever she can.

Alexander M.

Yale University (B.A. in Anthropology with Honors)

While at Yale, Alex studied Arabic and spent a semester abroad studying in Lebanon.  After brief stints at the State Department and the Department of Defense, Alex decided to do a backflip into education and the arts.  He served as the Teaching Fellow in History at Andover Phillips Academy in Andover, Massachusetts and is now a M.F.A. Candidate in Playwriting at UCLA.  His plays have been performed in LA, New York, Aspen, and Santa Cruz.  When not writing, he can often be found rowing in Marina del Rey or watching reruns of Chopped.
Alex W.

Stanford University
(B.A. in Music)

Raised in both Hawaii and the Philippines, Alex attended the Punahou School as a child and International School Manila through his middle and high school years. He is also a Canadian dual citizen, somehow.

While at Stanford, Alex wrote the music and lyrics for two full-length comedy-musicals and scores for several student films. After graduation, he moved to LA to embark on a career in composition. When not making music, he enjoys helping students of all ages with history, English, writing, and test prep. And he is still hoping to find his first music theory student.

Alyson Jensen

UCLA (B.A. in English Literature)

Born and raised in Southern California, Alyson has tutored privately as well as for not-for-profit organizations like 826LA and the UCLA Mentorship program for many years. She believes that effective organization and time-management skills are the first tools that any student needs to succeed, but that learning, if done right, should never feel like a “real” job.

When she is not tutoring, you can find Alyson hard at work collecting languages, bicycle accessories, graduate school applications and other asymmetrically-shaped things.

Amani S.

Yale University (B.A. in Theatre Studies)

Amani began teaching leadership and organizational skills to other high school students as a counselor and advisor through social justice organizations such as the National Conference for Community and Justice and PeaceJam, while attending Pembroke Hill High School in Kansas City, MO. In college, Amani taught theatre to American high school students in London and creative movement to preschool and elementary school students. Since graduating, she has been an editor for EssayEdge, the renowned application essay editing service, and tutored students attending some of the most competitive schools in Manhattan and Los Angeles. Amani brings a creative edge to tutoring an variety of subjects, and particularly enjoys guiding students with composition, research, and literary assignments.

Originally from Denver, Colorado, Ashley studied Aerospace Engineering and Applied Mathematics at the University of Colorado. After graduation, she moved to Los Angeles and earned a master's degree in Aerospace Engineering from the California Institute of Technology.  Currently, she is working on her Ph.D., focusing on space related problems. Most importantly, Ashley loves math and remembers what it feels like to struggle through AP calculus and even Algebra 2 classes. In her free time, Ashley loves playing tennis, traveling, and reading.
Ben A.

Columbia University
(B.A. in Urban Studies)

Originally from Western Massachusetts, Ben is a graduate of Columbia University, where he studied economics, film and urban politics. A lifelong love of film brought him to Los Angeles shortly after graduation, where he started his career as an agent trainee at The William Morris Agency. He soon ventured into the world of feature film acquisitions, attending festivals like Sundance. Most recently, Ben has worked in feature development for a major studio and an independent production company.

Working with professional screenwriters (many of whom could use grammar tutors) prepared him well for helping students develop confidence and achieve academic success. He is patient, unflappable and good-humored, and his favorite subjects are English and math. Ben plans to go to business school this Fall, where he hopes to bring his passion for teaching and team-building to his own academic studies. His other interests include movies, camping, skiing, technology and sampling the culinary patchwork of Los Angeles' diverse neighborhoods

Ben F.

Cornell University (B.S. in Human Development); The New York Film Academy (Screenwriting program)

Born and raised in Ithaca, N.Y., Ben moved to Los Angeles in 2005 to pursue screenwriting, and in 2007 sold his first script to Universal Studios.  Ben has previously tutored at the high school and college level, and has also worked as a one-to-one aide with Autistic children in middle schools.  During his spare time, Ben enjoys playing in the Beverly Hills Tennis league and, of course, watching movies.

Ben R.

Northwestern University (B.A. in Economics and History)

Ben grew up in Cherry Hill, NJ and moved to Los Angeles to pursue his dream of being a sitcom writer. Ben has worked as a Production Assistant on numerous TV shows including Scrubs, Eli Stone, and Worst Week. Ben was also a semi-finalist in the Disney/ABC Writing Fellowship and one of ten writers accepted into the Nickelodeon Writer’s Script Review.

Ben started tutoring in high school and also spent time in college tutoring children at an underfunded public school in New Orleans. In his spare time, Ben enjoys running and working with students in English, History, or math.
Cara L.

University of Michigan (B.A. in Spanish with high honors); New York University-in-Madrid (MA in Spanish Language and Translation)

Cara was born in New York City and grew up in Montclair, New Jersey. Her tutoring experience began by working with Michigan’s students athletes through the University’s Athletic Scholars Program and continued through her time in Madrid while earning her Masters’ degree. As part of her M.A., she wrote a 70 page thesis about the relationships among women in Spanish films about domestic violence.

Cara’s love of the Spanish language and culture inspired her to remain in Madrid for an additional year. During this time, she worked as an assistant to an English teacher in a bilingual school and gave private English lessons to the students outside of the classroom.  NYU-in-Madrid also employed her to tutor the undergraduate study abroad students in Spanish grammar and composition. Cara currently works as a manager in a translation company in Santa Monica.
Carrie Anne J.

U.C Berkeley (B.A. in Musicology and a minor in French Literature)

Carrie Anne graduated Cum Laude from U.C. Berkeley with a degree in Musicology and a minor in French Literature. She was President of the French club there and ran their tutoring program and was awarded departmental honors for her thesis on contemporary music in Finland. Carrie Anne went on to study classical piano at L'Ecole Normale de Musique in Paris, literature at Paris IV La Sorbonne, and Spanish literature in Madrid.

She prides herself on being highly intuitive when it comes to students' learning techniques (i.e., right brain vs. left brain) and being very adaptable to their needs. Her students say that she 'makes everything seem easy'- that is her ultimate goal. She loves rendering subjects (particularly languages, writing, and music) less intimidating to her students, while being extremely results-oriented- both for their motivation and enthusiasm. She is very open and accustomed to collaborating with parents.
Chris K.

Duke University (B.A. in English and Classical Studies); UCLA (M.F.A. in screenwriting)

Born and raised in Massachusetts, Chris is a teacher and writer who has sold projects to Disney and Universal. Chris enjoys running and hiking despite his increasingly creaky knees. He lives and limps in Venice.

Christine G.

Yale University (B.A. in Theatre Studies)

Christine graduated from Yale University with honors.  While getting her degree in Theater Studies, she also studied abroad at Oxford.  At Yale, she was the Vice President of Academic Excellence in her sorority and also worked as a mentor for Theater Students.  Since living in LA, she has worked as an academic and standardized test tutor.  She loves helping students with math, writing, research, organization, and test-taking difficulty.  When she's not tutoring, she's finding something creative to do--probably acting, writing, photographing, or thinking!

Daniel D.

University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill
(B.A. Journalism, B.A. English, minor in creative writing)

Daniel is Van Nuys born but Chicago bred, and he recently found his way back out west for a film internship. Back in school, Daniel kept busy with sports like basketball and ultimate frisbee, and he was active in musical theater and a cappella groups.  Daniel double-majored in journalism and English with a minor in creative writing at the University of North Carolina, and he considered being a sports journalist out of college.  Daniel spent the past year in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic teaching English literature and journalism at a bilingual high school.  The previous year he taught at South Florida Summerbridge, an enrichment program for high-achieving, low-income students.  He has been tutoring since high school in everything from voice lessons to Spanish to essay writing.

David K.

Georgetown University (B.A. in English)

David has been working with young people since he was young himself. After spending seven summers as a camp counselor and eventually an Assistant Director at Woodtrail Day Camp, he volunteered as an academic/life skills tutor at the Demeter drug rehabilitation clinic while attending Georgetown University. This experience led him to work as a private tutor to high school students, covering subjects ranging from AP Psychology to SAT Prep. In addition, David worked as a substitute teacher in various subjects throughout college and taught ESL while studying abroad in Madrid.

After graduating Summa Cum Laude from Georgetown with a degree in English, David joined AmeriCorps and worked with the educational nonprofit City Year. He employed improvisational theatre techniques to help public school students act out solutions to social problems such as gang violence, substance abuse and homophobia. During this time David also tutored students in grades K-12 in reading, writing and mathematics skills. He has spent the last three years pursuing an MFA in Film Directing at UCLA, where his work as a teacher and teacher’s assistant has continued. Most recently, David designed and taught curriculum for UCLA's Summer Discovery program.

David's work as a tutor has been one of his most rewarding jobs. He really loves watching students grow and develop confidence in their academic abilities, and he feels a great deal of pride when they succeed.

Daniel W.

UCLA (B.S. in Pure Mathematics, summa cum laude & highest departmental honors)

A native of Southern California, Daniel became the third generation in his family to attend UCLA, earning the school's prestigious Regents Scholarship out of High School. He balanced his time at UCLA between classes, tutoring math, volunteering for the Special Olympics and following Bruin athletics. Daniel has five years experience as a summer teaching assistant at academic summer programs run by Johns Hopkins University and Duke University where he has taught exciting courses like Game Theory and Spy 101 (Code-breaking).

After graduating in 2008, Daniel embarked on a two year around the world journey where he visited 40 countries on three continents. After adventures that included working in a bookstore on a Greek Island, an archeology dig in Israel and working as a math tutor in Morocco, Daniel has returned home to do what he calls the best job in the world, “Tutoring math.” He loves working with students of all levels, sharing his love of math and using derivations to promote learning not memorization.

David L.

Stanford (B.A. in Urban Studies)

Born in Hawaii, David grew up in New York, California, and Texas.  In college, he was a member of the Stanford Football team.  He began tutoring his freshman year in college, and even taught a class on public speaking in Stanford's school of engineering.  After graduation, he went on to play professional football with the Miami Dolphins, Hamilton Tiger-Cats, and New York Sentinels.  David has returned to Los Angeles to attend Pepperdine University in pursuit of an MBA.
Edith E.

U.C. Berkeley (B.A.  Integrative Biology and minor in Spanish)

Edith is one of those rare finds, an actual Californian.  She grew up in Los Angeles and attended the now defunct Lincoln Medical Magnet.  She moved up to the Bay Area to attend U.C. Berkeley.  After graduating she started work as an elementary school teacher at one of the most academically advanced school in the Bay Area.  She was also recognized in Who’s Who Among America’s Teachers.

She enjoys tutoring because she is able to continue educating and enriching young minds while being able to spend a lot of quality time with her son and husband.
Evan H.

(B.S. Journalism and International Studies)

Evan is an award-winning staff writer for a national business magazine. He specializes in writing about finance and technology, and has helped younger reporters learn the mechanics of engaging business journalism. He likes to kick back by surfing and hiking up and down the southern California coast.

A Philadelphia native, Geoff is descended from a long line of teachers. His mother and grandmother were both principals, and he has several aunts, uncles and one sibling in education. After graduating from Harvard University, Geoff moved to Los Angeles and continued his involvement with young people as a tutor, coach and mentor for at-risk teens.

In addition to tutoring, Geoff has sold a few studio movie projects and has his first novel coming out in the Fall of 2010, a historical-based adventure set in New York City.
Grace P.

Columbia University
(B.A. in Political Science and Hispanic Studies)

As President and Co-Founder of YUPP (Young United Professionals for Pie) Grace Parra filmed a documentary about the 2007 National Pie Championships, a yearly competition where pie bakers, pie chefs, and pie enthusiasts gather to laud their favorite baked good. Grace's fascination with pie began in her homeland of Texas, which is also where her love for comedy writing and tutoring began. She moved to New York to attend Columbia University, where she studied politics and Hispanic Studies while teaching middle school students in Harlem reading, writing, and mathematics.  She has extensive experience teaching high school students and adults in the areas of Spanish and English, though she isn't afraid to embrace her deep and unfettered love for equations.  Grace moved out to LA as part of NBC's writing fellowship Writers on the Verge, and wonders when network television will hone the talents of Chemists on the Verge.
